My design focusses on the novel’s female relationships by using ambiguous silhouettes, as well as the ideas of faith, fractures, and family ties.

This project is based on exploring the design process for creating a book cover in a free and unfearful way. Therefore, this was approached more through the process of experimenting than having a final outcome originally in mind.

The designs have been developed in a way that would appeal to an audience that reads modern contemporary fiction as well as LGBTQ+ stories through looking at comparison covers and other market research. As they progressed I wanted to avoid over using  purple in my final designs as this feels too cliché when the audience deserves to be challenged and intrigued.

The story itself is incredibly heavy as it doesn’t shy away from the trauma and abuse the main character Celie endures. Through all the darkness there is a certain hope to the book where the characters find strength within themselves, in their friendships and their familial bonds as they journey towards the final chapters.
